Bike Trainer Recall Gives You A Good Reason Not To Exercise
By spokesman | January 28, 2009
Several different models of stationary bicycle trainers manufactered by Saris Cycling group have been recalled. A pin on the trainer “can loosen during use, causing the machine to become disengaged, and pose a fall hazard to consumers.” The details, including the model numbers and procedure to get a new trainer, are in this press release from the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The press release mentions that “no injuries have been reported”. This is likely due to the fact that most people don’t use the home exercise equipment that they buy.

Despite the best of intentions at the time of the initial purchase, the stuff rarely gets used. If you don’t believe me, check out the Sporting Category on Craigslist. For Washington DC, there were over 250 items listed in that category just for today and most of the items were for home exercise equipment. I counted 5 Total Gym units (the exercise contraption sold via late night infomercial starring Chuck Norris and Christie Brinkley) listed today and another 5 from the last several days. Either the owners had successfully used the total gym to transform themselves into Norris/Brinkley clones and no longer had a need for the device or they were looking to get rid of an unused item that reminded them of a late night spur of the moment purchase. Most of them were described as “like new”, so you be the judge.
