Christmas Gifts For Bicyclists
By spokesman | December 7, 2008
The purpose of this post is to suggest some Christmas gifts for bicyclists.
Bicycling Magazine
Bicycling, the top selling magazine on the sport, is always a great gift. The magazine covers all aspects of cycling including racing, training, touring and new products. Click here to purchase a 1 year subscription - Bicycling (1-year),
Books
Several excellent bicycling related books were published this year. One book written by Johan Bruneel, the managing director who managed Lance Armstong to victory is entitled We Might As Well Win: On the Road to Success with the Mastermind Behind a Record-Setting Eight Tour de France Victories. See my blog posting on a book signing by Johan Bruyneel for more information on the book.
Another book published this year focusing on professional cycling is Roadie: The Misunderstood World of a Bike Racer. The book does a terrific job of explaining the complex and weird culture of bicycle road racing. It is very funny and entertaining.
Master photographer Graham Watson specialized in photographing bicycle races. Although his book was not published this year, his book Landscapes of Cycling includes many of his most beautiful photos. You will want to go to France or Italy to watch one of the great tours after looking at the beautiful images in this book.
GPS Unit
For a higher end gift, you may want to consider a Bicycle GPS unit. The GARMIN 010-00447-20 Edge 305HR Bicycle Monitor With GPS & Barometric Sensor is a great way to improve your training. It allows you to track your effort via heart rate or cadence. If you do training rides over a regular route, you can track your progress against your best or previous rides. The data from the unit also creates beautiful maps in conjunction with several on-line sites.
DVDs
A DVD of the movie, The Flying Scotsman, tells the true story of how a bicycle racer broke the one hour record on a bicycle he designed and built. The cyclist, Graeme Obree, suffered from depression which added an extra dimension to the incredible story.
