Cycling Isn’t The Only Sport With Testing Problems
By spokesman | August 22, 2009
Professional cycling has had its share of difficulties with drug testing. The delay in announcing results, inconsistencies in testing procedures and detailed scientific debates over results has made the governing organizations of cycling appear inept on several occasions. However, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), has taken the crown as the most inept sports organization. Recently the IAAF asked South Africa to conduct a gender verification test on track star Caster Semenya who won the Woman’s 800 meter run at the World Championships in Berlin week.
The gender verification test is going to take several weeks. A group of scientists are analyzing cellular matter obtained through a cheek swab. The evaluation will examine chromosomal and hormonal patterns. The panel that makes the final decision will include an endocrinologist, a psychologist and several others. I am not a medical professional, but a gender verification test should be a simple matter. Urine samples are regularly taken in order to test for doping. If the athlete provides the urine sample while standing, the athlete is a boy. If the athlete sits down to provide the urine sample, the athlete is a girl.
On a more serious note, if the IAAF wants to proceed with the test, that is their business. However, announcing a test and not have the results available for weeks is an injustice to the athletes.
