Dramatic Finish At The Giro D’Italia

By spokesman | May 31, 2009

At the start of time trial on the last day of the 2009 Giro D’Italia, Denis Menchov led Danilo Di Luca DiLuc by 21 seconds.  After Di Luca finished his time trial, it appeared as if Menchov would successfully defend his lead.  Then suddenly on a straight segment of road in the final kilometer, Menchov crashed.  A mechanic jumped out of the moving follow car within 2 seconds and got a new bike before Menchov even stop sliding down the road.  He quickly got Menchov on the new bike and Menchov rode on to victory.  Watch this video of the crash and keep an eye on the timer to see how quickly the mechanic reacted.

This a a link to a video of Menchov’s team watching the crash.   It isn’t in english, but you don’t need to understand a single word to appreciate the emotional roller coaster as his teammates thought the race was lost, but then Menchov recovered and won.
