Giro D’Italia TV Coverage

By spokesman | May 8, 2009

One benefit of Lance Armstrong’s return to cycling is the additional coverage of the sport.  The Tour De France has had daily television coverage in the United States for the last ten years.  However the Giro gets less coverage.  Versus TV had tried daily coverage of the race several years ago but dropped it after only one year.

Now that Lance is back, there is more interest.  Universal Sports (a division of NBC) will be airing daily coverage of the Giro D’Italia from May 9-31.  They will also feature live on-line coverage.  The TV coverage will play at noon EST each day with replays at 9PM and 11PM EST.  See the Universal website for the channel on you cable system and their cycling page with news, results, photos and video

I think it is ridiculous that at the last minute, NBC/Universal Sports (which not cycling fan has access to through their cable or satillite provider) is able to buy away the coverage rights from cycling.tv. Last years coverage was fantastic and available to all via the internet for a price, which I for one was more than willing to pay and had already paid for this year. I am a hugh Lance fan and supporter pre and post cancer. I am also excited about his come back and the worldwide support it will bring to his cause. I am also a financial services professional that understands the need for corporations to search and expand their profit base. I just wish it had not touch and affected my ability to watch the sport that I love.

Universal Sports. Not live but it shows much of the highlights I think.

Way too many commercials in between. Incredibly annoying. Might as well not watch at all. It really affects the pleasure of watching this. I am currently exploring alternatives (and, no, I am not talking about TiVO and fast forwarding).

Universal Sports claims it is showing the Giro on Comcast channel 249 in New Jersey. A Comcast person told me that’s not the case. What goes? Do you know?
