Good Move, Goodell
By spokesman | April 22, 2010
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell issued a suspension of Pittsburgh Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. “I recognize that the allegations in Georgia were disputed and that they did not result in criminal charges being filed against you,” Goodell said in his letter to the six-year veteran. Goodell’s letter went on to say ”My decision today is not based on a finding that you violated Georgia law, or on a conclusion that differs from that of the local prosecutor. That said, you are held to a higher standard as an NFL player, and there is nothing about your conduct in Milledgeville that can remotely be described as admirable, responsible, or consistent with either the values of the league or the expectations of our fans.” While it is commendable that Goodell took this action and recognized that players need to meet a “higher standard” of behavior, isn’t it time to do something about steroids and performance enhancing drugs. The NFL draft was this evening. The weights of the first 20 players selected were 218, 300, 295, 308, 203, 300, 190, 258, 195, 295, 325, 220, 263, 195, 265, 270, 330, 312, 245 and192 pounds. Cycling has a reputation of being a sport with rampant drug use. However, the professional cycling organizations are testing athletes more than any other sport and suspending violators. Football and baseball turn a blind eye to the abuse. Does the list of player’s weights prove anything? No, but these players are significantly larger than the players of 10 and 20 years ago. Despite the obesity epidemic in our society, it isn’t corn syrup that is bulking up football players. You can argue that this is circumstancial evidence, but Roethlisberger was just suspended on nothing more than circumstancial evidence. If there were more evidence, he would have been prosecuted.
