Lance Armstrong Is Just One Of The Pack
By spokesman | May 15, 2009
The Giro D’Italia has completed three mountain stages so far. For the first mountain stage, Lance stayed close to the lead group. However the next two stages took a toll. Here are his results from the first three mountain stages.
- Stage 4 - 15 seconds behind leader
- Stage 5 - 2:58 behind leader
- Stage 6 - 1:15 behind leader
That is nearly 4:30 lost in just 3 stages. After stage 6, Lance posted the following messages on twitter
- Done with stage 6. Uh…wow. That was the craziest last 30k I’ve ever seen. Long, fast decent at 80k (50pmh) plus then a tight circuit.
- Not sure that’s necessary really. Tomorrow is the same kind of finish. It’s bike racing, not moto gp..
- At one point today we reached 110kph. That’s almost 70 mph. CRAZY!
In summary, Lance Armstrong is complaining about the race going too fast and he is losing minutes on individuals stages. He is no longer a cycling god, he is just human. The challenge now is to see if he can dig deep and win a stage or provide some crucial support to Levi Leipheimer so he can win the Giro. I think that Lance’s combination of skill, ego and pride will enable him to do it. However I don’t see him competing in the Tour De France like this. If his performance doesn’t improve at the Giro, I bet he doesn’t ride the Tour.
