Out Of Control - The Dow Jones and Toyota Prius

By spokesman | May 7, 2010

The Dow Jones dropped 1000 points during trading on Thursday before recovering most of the loss.  It was the largest intra-day drop ever.  Robert Riech on his blog speculated on the reasons for the drop including pointing to the computers that automate trades.  He wrote that “Giant high-speed computers generate millions of trades based on instructions embedded in computer programs designed to move fast enough to beat everyone else.  So when there’s a glitch in one of them it can immediately spread to all the other programs designed to move just as fast.”  On a separate topic, the sudden unexpected acceleration with the Toyota Prius has also been attributed to software problems. With all of these recent problems, I am glad the my bike is still a totally mechanical device.  There are no electronics or software controlling its motion.  I pedal and it goes.  I squeeze the brakes and it stops.
