Viagra and Doping
By spokesman | March 11, 2009

The World Anti-Doping Agency(WADA) recently announced that they are investigating the effects of Viagra as a performance enhancing drug - not sexual performance, but actually improving the ability of cyclists in competition. Viagra was invented by mistake. Pfizer was actually trying to develop a drug to treat pulmonary hypertension or high blood pressure in arteries of the lungs. The drug would reduce blood pressure by suppressing an enzyme that controls blood flow. This would allow blood vessels to relax and widen, thus increasing the flow of blood. Anyway during the testing of the drug, the scientists noticed an interesting side effect. That side effect eventually became the primary purpose of the drug as it was marketed for a different purpose. Pfizer sold billions of dollars worth of the drug. The increased circulation caused by the drug can potentially give an athlete an advantage.
So WADA is testing it to see if it should be added to list of banned substances. If it is, then WADA will have to begin testing cyclists for Viagra. I am not a scientist but it seems to me given the effect of Viagra and the cyclist’s attire, a chemical test isn’t really needed. Once the stage winner receives the traditional congratulatory kisses from the podium girls, I think any abuse of Viagra would be pretty clear.
